The Dressed Things In Life Are Free …….
Do you feel like you have lots of clothes but nothing to wear? If I were to say “Hey, what about that top?” would you say “Oh no that doesn’t fit” or “I hate that top. It looks terrible on me!” Well it’s time for a wardrobe makeover!
How often do you actually give your wardrobe a makeover? Is it jam packed with so many clothes that you don’t even know where to start? This can be extremely stressful. If you're anything like me, you don’t respond well to clutter. If you're a busy person, having to pick outfits in a hurry can be a complete disaster when your wardrobe is so jam packed that you’re at risk of a coat hanger whacking you on the head everytime you open it!
When less actually means more. This is so true when it comes to clothes. I know it sounds ironic but purging your closet will actually leave you with more to wear. Keeping some basic and classic pieces to put different outfits together is the key to having an organised closet.
If you don’t wear it don’t keep it! So we all have that one pair of jeans we bought on the Black Friday sale that were two sizes too small but we said to ourselves, “This is my inspiration to lose 5 kilos. So I can fit in these jeans because I love them so much” ---only to shove them in the back of the closet so you don’t have a reminder that you need to lose 5 kilos but would rather eat that Betty’s Burger on the weekend with a side of fries. Okay maybe that’s just me (insert awkward face). If it doesn’t fit, throw it out! If you haven’t worn it for a year, throw it out! If it has holes in it, throw it out! If it doesn’t fit now then throw it out! Only keep the clothes you absolutely love, if you don’t love it … . well you know what to do.
Lay it all out. The first step to your wardrobe purge is to pull everything out. This includes socks, bras and underwear. You want to start with a nice clean slate. Look at your empty closet and you will instantly feel like you can breathe! I normally have two big garbage bags ready to go. One for clothes that are just terrible and cannot be saved and one that I could use to fill with clothes that I can donate to charity or can give away. The rest are the items you want to keep. Only keep the bras that fit. If your socks don’t have a partner, most likely they will never reunite. One of the world’s greatest mysteries, where is that other sock?
You never know what you have until you clean your closet. Now that you have all the clothes you love, you're ready to fill your closet with things you can easily see and have access to. Keep all outfits that are in season at the front and out of season at the back and out of sight (no point in having your giant winter coat taking up all the space when it’s the middle of summer).
You can create new outfits by pairing dressy tops with jeans. When you hit the gym you know you won’t have one ankle sock and one that goes higher than the bottom of your lululemon tights. Now everything you take out of your wardrobe is going to fit. So before you feel the need to go shopping try your own closet first as now you have the key pieces to pull together some amazing outfits!
