If you were blessed with curly hair, you may have gone through life feeling like it is more of a curse. Most curly headed girls go through the grueling process of chemical straightening at least once in their lives. Sacrificing a fried scalp for silky, straight tresses is a way of life for many women with naturally curly hair. Don't worry girls I have you covered!
What Is The Curly Girl Method?
The Curly Girl Method has been life changing for many curly girls by allowing them to embrace their natural hair and confidently rock their beautiful curls. Lorraine Massey, who has been featured in Allure, InStyle, The New York Times, etc, published her Curly Girl: The Handbook and it has been wildly successful.
The hair washing and styling routine eliminates products containing silicones, parabens, and sulfates and restricts the use of heat styling, combs, and over use of shampoo. Only using shampoo and Co washing on the other days. this means using conditioner to wash your hair instead of shampoo. It may sound unrealistic at first, but the results are amazing. The first step to embarking upon curl freedom is to understand what type of curls you have.
What Type of Hair Do You Have?
Why is hair curly or straight? When we are born, our hair has disulfide bonds between hair proteins on the shaft of the hair. The greater number of links, the more curl. Andre Walker, hair stylist to Oprah Winfrey, developed a hair typing system that classifies hair textures into 4 types.
Type 1: Straight Hair
This is the most resilient of hair types and is also the most oily.
Type 2: Wavy Hair
Somewhere between straight and curly hair lives wavy hair. Wavy hair is prone to more frizz and is a bit resistant to styling.
Type 3: Curly Hair
This type of hair is prone to frizz and is full bodied and prone to damage. Curly Hair is temperamental, especially when too much product or the wrong product is used.
Type 4: Kinky Hair
This type of curly hair is tightly coiled, wiry, and delicate. Kinky hair tends to be the driest type of hair and is prone to breakage. Avoiding harsh chemicals is very important for type 4 hair.
Curly Girl Method Steps
Step 1: Shampoo
The once a week shampoo is a bit more involved that a typical shampoo regiment. Saturate hair completely before massaging in Pump Curly Girl Shampoo. Focus on the scalp and allow the lather to run down the length of your hair.
Step 2: Condition
Next, use Pump Curly Girl Conditioner and squish it into your hair as if you were trying to squeeze the condition into the hair follicles. Rinse but not completely. Leave a bit of conditioner in your hair.
Step 3: Style
Styling product is what maintains the spiral curl and tames frizz. Use Pump Curly Girl 2 in 1 Define and Repair Cream to define and hydrate your curls while acting as a leave in treatment that won't weigh down your hair.
Step 4: Time to Plop
Plopping is an important, yet basic step in the Curly Girl Method. Use a hair towel to wrap your hair while it is still wet. This video by The Glam Belle is a great demonstration of how to master plopping.
Step 5: Day 2 and Beyond
Sure, your curls look great on day one, but what happens when you get to day 3 and 4? Pump Spring Back Curls is made from water, protein and extracts so it helps refresh your day 2 and beyond curls while nourishing your hair at the same time. Reform curls and reduce frizz until your next shampoo.
Following the Curly Girl Method takes some commitment and the right, Curly Girl compliant products. After a while of sticking with it, the results are amazing and you will finally love your gorgeous naturally curly tresses.
